If you have decided it’s time to turn the clock back a bit with BOTOX® injections, you might be feeling a little apprehensive as your first appointment approaches. This is of course, completely normal. However, there are some steps you can take prior to your first visit that will reduce your stress level and make you feel more comfortable about the treatment.
What Should I Expect?
First time patients are often most concerned about discomfort. The good news here is that BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are relatively painless. While the procedure requires the use of a needle, it causes minimal discomfort because it is so small. As with any injection, you might experience a bit of swelling, bruising, or redness, however, these effects are temporary. You will be able to get right back to your normal activities immediately following the treatment.
How Should I Prepare?
There is no special preparation needed except to cleanse your face thoroughly with a mild cleanser and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and make sure to avoid moisturizer and makeup before the appointment.
To minimize the risk of bruising and redness, please avoid alcohol and blood thinning medications such as aspirin, fish oil supplements, and Vitamin E for one week prior to your appointment. If you are on prescription blood thinners, make sure to inform your provider about these or any other medications you may be taking. Smoking can cause excess bruising as well, so ask your provider how long you should avoid cigarettes prior to your appointment
If desired, you can take a pineapple extract like Bromelain or Arnica Montana supplements 1 week prior and up to 5 days after your appointment (with your doctor’s permission) to reduce bruising.
How Long Will the Procedure Take?
While you have likely pondered and thought about getting BOTOX® injections for the past couple of months, the treatment itself is relatively quick and easy. You probably spent more time looking at your face in the mirror this morning than the injections will take to complete. You will also be able to walk out of the office and head right back to work, or whatever other activity is on your to-do list for the day, without any problems.
Do I Need to Bring Someone With Me?
If you would like to have someone with you for moral support, that is never a bad idea. However, if you are comfortable coming by yourself, you will be able to drive yourself back home too. The procedure is so simple that there is no need to administer any type of sedative – so you will not be groggy in the least when you leave.
