How to Care for Your Invisalign Trays

Invisalign provides more flexibility and freedom than traditional metal braces. You do, however, need to treat your teeth and your Invisalign trays responsibly during the orthodontic treatment process. One of the most important aspects of your Invisalign treatment is keeping your aligner trays clean and free from build-up. This is the best way to ensure your treatment works as it is designed to.

Brush and Rinse Your Aligners Often

Using antibacterial soap and warm water to brush your aligners, then rinsing them thoroughly, is one of the best ways to keep your Invisalign trays clean. Never use toothpaste, as it can discolor the trays, and make sure to brush gently so you don’t end up scratching the plastic.

If you wash your aligners with soap, make sure it is unscented and colorless, as these additives can discolor and stain your aligners. Invisalign trays are designed to be as invisible as possible, so the last thing you want is stained trays.

Clean your aligners often and rinse your trays several times a day to kill germs and bacteria that can grow on them – in or out of your mouth.

Soak Your Aligners Periodically and Store Them Safely

In addition to brushing daily and rinsing your aligners several times a day, you should soak them in denture cleaner, Invisalign crystals, or retainer cleaner every so often. Doing this once a week is sufficient.

Always remove your Invisalign before you eat or drink anything other than water. Foods can scratch, stain, and even break your trays – leading to an unwanted pause in your treatment. When you remove them, never put them in a napkin or anywhere other than the case they came in. This way they will be well protected, and you won’t accidentally toss them in the garbage.

Keep Your Teeth Clean

Lastly, make sure to keep up your dental hygiene by brushing and flossing after every meal. This will remove food particles and plaque that might interfere with your Invisalign treatment or cause cavities to form.
