Chicago Cosmetic Dentist

You may be getting a filling to fill a cavity or a gap between teeth, or to repair a cracked, chipped, or worn down tooth. Many patients are nervous about this procedure, especially if it is their first time getting a filling. The truth is that there is nothing to fear.

Even if you have chosen not to use sedation therapy, the process of getting a filling is quicker than you may think. Although it is not entirely comfortable, it is entirely painless. Here is what to expect:

  • Your Chicago dentist or an assistant will help make you comfortable in the chair. You may be offered headphones so you will not get too bored during the procedure.
  • A local anesthetic will be swabbed on your gum, numbing that area. You will then be given a shot to numb your entire mouth. Because of the anesthetic, the shot will only feel like pressure.
  • The longest part of the procedure will be the drilling of the impaired area to make it easier to fill. You will hear unpleasant noises during this time but will not feel pain.
  • Your Chicago cosmetic dentist will insert the composite filling and help it dry quickly with the use of a small, hand held heat lamp. As soon as the filling dries, you’re done!
  • Your mouth and lips will remain numb for up to three hours. During this time, you need to be careful not to bite your tongue. It is recommended that you avoid eating.
