The benefits of fluoride for the teeth have been known to humans and dental professionals for some time. The idea has been so accepted that 43 of the 50 largest cities add fluoride to their drinking water for the benefit of the population. While this is helpful, it is still recommended that people brush with a fluoridated toothpaste. Some people will find that this amount of fluoride is insufficient for their needs. In some cases, particularly for people with braces or whose gums have pulled away from their teeth, a fluoride rinse can be another layer of protection against cavities and tooth decay.

Fluoride rinses are available by prescription from any dentist or orthodontist. They can be acquired at most drug stores and in many of the large nation-wide stores like Wal Mart. In many cases, the prescription for the fluoride rinse is not necessary to buy a bottle of the rinse.

One of the biggest benefits of a fluoride rinse or gel is that it delivers an extra layer of fluoride protection to the teeth. Fluoride is known to prevent tooth decay and enhance the health of teeth. By adding another dose of fluoride, a person lessens the risk of tooth decay.

Not everyone needs to use a fluoride rinse though. Those that need it the most are individuals who take a medication that causes dry mouth or who have the condition naturally, those who have braces, and those who have already had their gums recede a little bit.

It is never too early to start being proactive about the health of one’s teeth and taking preventative measures.
