Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ) is an umbrella term covering both acute and chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint. The temporomandibular joint connects the lower jaw to the skull. As a result of this, the disorder and dysfunction associated with TMJ can result in significant pain and impairment.
There are a variety of external factors which place strain on the temporomandibular joint. Over-opening the jaw beyond the range of the individual is one factor. In other cases, unusually aggressive or repetitive sliding of the jaw sideways or forward play a significant role. The movements may be due to a variety of factors.
The aggressive or repetitive actions may be due to modification of the occlusal surface of the teeth. This can be due to neglect or accidental trauma. Speech habits resulting in jaw thrusting as well as excessive gum chewing or nail biting can influence the appearance of TMJ. Also, excessive jaw movements associated with exercise may be the root of the problem. Another common cause of TMJ is the repetitive, unconscious jaw movements associated with bruxing. Bruxing is the gnashing, grinding of teeth accompanied by jaw clenching. It commonly is an indication of stress and is performed during sleep.
One treatment option is to restore the teeth. Another option deals with pain relief. Typically, over the counter, standard pain killers don’t do much because the pain is mostly neural. To combat this, mild anti-depressants can be administered.
