Who Performs Root Canals?
A root canal can be performed by a dentist or edodontist. An endontist is a specialized dentist in the areas of the causes, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and injuries of the human dental pulp or the nerve of the tooth.
Preliminary Steps
An X-ray is taken to determine the shape of the root canals and if there are any signs of infection in the surrounding bone. A local anesthetic is used to numb the area around the tooth and help the patient relax. Before the procedure, a rubber dam is placed around the tooth to keep the area dry.
Removing Bacteria
First an access hole is drilled into the tooth. Then the pulp, bacteria, decayed nerve tissue, and related debris is removed from the tooth. A series of root canal files is used to finish up the cleaning out process.
Sealing the Tooth
After thoroughly cleaning the tooth, it is sealed. It is often a week before the seal is applied in case of additional infection. A sealer paste and rubber compound is placed into the tooth’s root canal to fill the interior of the tooth.
