Many celebrities recently have flashed more than just pearly
whites when they smile. The trend, currently, is for celebrities to have
grills, or grillz, made. These items are also known as fronts. They are
decorative covers for teeth made of gold, silver, or platinum and then
frequently covered in jewels. Typically, they snap over one or more of a
person’s front teeth.
Grills are not the same as caps as they are still removable.
Some wearers have had their teeth altered with gold crowns to resemble a grill
permanently. While grills are a trend that many frown upon, there are no
studies showing that they are bad for a person’s teeth. On the other hand, there
are also no studies showing that the grill won’t ever do any harm to a person’s
teeth.
While they don’t necessarily ruin a person’s teeth, a grill
that is left in too long or not brushed frequently can result in decayed teeth
that have to be removed. The grill attaches to the front of a person’s teeth
but doesn’t actually seal the area. This allows for food and other debris to
get trapped between the grill and the teeth. When this happens, bacteria
produce acids which allow the teeth to decay. Another problem arises when a
person has a grill made of less than a precious metal. In these instances, a
person may have an allergic reaction to the grill.
If a person has a grill, he or she needs to be very careful
about brushing and flossing well. The best way to eliminate problems is to
limit the time spent wearing a removable grill.
