Implants were first experimented with in ancient Mayan society and generally refer to implanting a structure into the bone, which the bone bonds to and grows around. In the 1950s modern research scientists began experimenting with implants for use in knee and hip replacement surgery. In the 1970s P I Branemark, the famous Swedish orthopedic surgeon pioneered much of the early research related to the use of titanium in dental implants.
Today, cosmetic dental technology has advanced to the point where dental implants are a routine option for most patients and useful as a solution for many dental problems.

What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are usually made out of titanium and surgically inserted into the upper or lower jaw bone by a Periodontist or a dentist; thus providing a fixed and stable root for attaching dental restorations. Crowns that are attached to dental implants are secure, natural looking and can be adjusted, re-tightened over time allowing for a long term solution to enhancing your smile.

What does getting dental implants involve?
From start to finish, the process of receiving dental implants can take several months and up to 5 of 6 visits to see Dr. Bagai. Initially, Dr. Bagai will perform X-rays and impressions (molds) to determine and fully understand the issues related to the teeth, gum tissue, bone and over all structure of the region of the dental implant. Dr. Bagai is also a certified Sedation Dentist who can offer several options depending on the patients desire -- from full sedation to local anesthesia. After the anesthesia has been applied and while the region of the mouth is numb, Dr. Bagai will surgically place the implant into the bone of the jaw. It can take up to six months for the implant to fully adhere and bond to the jaw bone, which will require scheduled check-ups to monitor the progress. Depending on several factors, including the type of implant, Dr. Bagai may perform a second surgery to insert a “post” that will be used to hold the artificial tooth in place.
After a period of several weeks, the artificial teeth are joined to the post portion of the anchor; this stage can require several fittings and one to two months to complete. After a second period of healing (typically 2 weeks) the artificial teeth are secured to the implant. The end result is a secure structure that you can be confident with for years to come.
